Hero (1992)

£0.00

(Accidental Hero)

Country: US
Technical: Technicolor 116m
Director: Stephen Frears
Cast: Dustin Hoffman, Geena Davis, Andy Garcia, Joan Cusack, Chevy Chase

Synopsis:

An antisocial fencer of stolen goods awaiting sentence stumbles upon a stricken jet in the middle of a storm and grudgingly saves everyone on board, including a celebrity TV reporter. Wishing to remain anonymous, he leaves the scene and hitches a lift with a down-and-out philanthropist who later claims the reward offered by the TV station to the mystery hero, he too becoming a hero of sorts in the process.

Review:

As confused as it sounds, uncertain as to whether to be comedy or satire, this overlong and at times preachy film contains some sharp scenes amid the crassness but is ultimately as erratic as Hoffman's 'Columbo impersonation' performance. It manages at least to maintain its cynicism almost to the end without 'bottling' into sentiment, and Davis is great.
