Hellboy (2004)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: DeLuxe 122m
Director: Guillermo del Toro
Cast: Ron Perlman, John Hurt, Selma Blair, Rupert Evans

Synopsis:

Sixty years after foiling a dastardly alliance between the resurrected Rasputin and Nazi occultists to open a portal and free the seven imprisoned Gods of Chaos, an expert in the paranormal working for the FBI must face them again, aided by the strange demon-like creature he adopted at that earlier encounter.

Review:

A cross between Indiana Jones and the X Men, this curious comic strip adaptation has much to recommend it as popcorn fodder: predictably intricate mechanical and creature effects from its creator, who embraces the whole alternative mythology thing with gusto, a wry and laconic eponymous hero (Perlman clearly did his preparation watching re-runs of The Gauntlet) and a fantastic production design (the budget clearly well spent). Whether it made back its money is doubtful, and the returns of watching an indestructible hero creature slug it out with a succession of devilish hounds diminish somewhat, so that the climactic appearance of a gloopy, Deep Rising-like monster from hell raises barely an eyebrow.
