Hell and High Water (1954)
Country: US
Technical: Technicolor/Cinemascope 101m
Director: Samuel Fuller
Cast: Richard Widmark, Bella Darvi, Victor Francen, Cameron Mitchell
Synopsis:
After the Korean War a former US submarine captain arrives in Japan for a uniquely unofficial expedition to investigate a Chinese nuclear facility on a remote Arctic island.
Review:
This Fox Cold War drama is Fuller's first film in widescreen and second with Widmark in a row. It's pretty brisk stuff, as we are accustomed, with vigorous action sequences involving machine-gun fire and spectacular, at times nuclear, explosions. The plot seems just a little hysterical now, which adds to the charm, but unfortunately the submarine miniatures have not aged so well. Widmark plays a typically compromised hero, given to bouts of brutality and arrogance, but basically a good egg.
