Head-on (2004)
(Gegen die Wand)
Country: GER/TUR
Technical: col 121m
Director: Fatih Akin
Cast: Birol Ünel, Sibel Kekilli, Meltem Cumbul
Synopsis:
A Turkish girl in Hamburg marries a forty-something fellow countryman in order to get away from her family's control, but has no intention of consummating the union. He goes along with it because he has hit rock bottom after the death of his ex. After years of self-neglect and abuse the two tortured souls finally return, separately, to their homeland for a consummation and a new beginning.
Review:
A hard-hitting film which drags a little in the Hamburg sequences, in as much as watching people slowly kill themselves never makes easy viewing. Gradually, though, one is won over by the characters so that, by the time of the epilogue, one is happy for them despite their separate lives. A brilliantly acted film which says much about the lives of immigrants in Germany, and the rootlessness felt by some.
