Hard Target (1993)
Country: US
Technical: DeLuxe 97m
Director: John Woo
Cast: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Yancy Butler, Lance Henriksen, Arnold Vosloo, Wilford Brimley
Synopsis:
A drifter in New Orleans is hired by a wealthy young woman to locate her father, who turns out to have been a down-and-out employed to act as prey by a vicious entrepreneur who makes a living offering the ultimate hunting thrill to those willing to pay.
Review:
Extremely violent and rather cynically updated reworking of The Most Dangerous Game, possessed of much less wit and excitement than its predecessor, though executed with the style expected of this director whose first US production it was. Thus we have no end of galvanising pans to nowhere at the end of shots, crunchy cocking of weaponry and slow-motion doves and dives. But by the time we get to the showdown the film becomes grounded by its own hyperbole as a man with a shotgun and a horse sees off twenty heavily armed big game hunters equipped with grenade launchers, motorcycles and a helicopter.
