Happening (2021)
(L'événement)
Country: FR
Technical: col/1.37:1 100m
Director: Audrey Diwan
Cast: Anamaria Vartolomei, Louise Chevillotte, Pio Marmaï, Sandrine Bonnaire
Synopsis:
About to take her baccalauréat in 1960s Angoulême, Anne discovers she is pregnant. Forbidden from obtaining an abortion by the laws in force at the time, and unable to confide in her parents and teachers, she grows increasingly desperate.
Review:
Based on a memoir by Annie Ernaux, this is a gruelling reminder of the lack of choice confronting girls at the time; though it is of purely historic interest now and some may question that the viewer is spared few graphic details. Nevertheless, the unusual aspect ratio draws us into Anne's perspective, and it is a truly courageous performance from the young Vartolomei.
