Hangmen Also Die (1943)
Country: US
Technical: bw 131m
Director: Fritz Lang
Cast: Brian Donlevy, Anna Lee
Synopsis:
Resistance fighters plot and carry out the assassination of Heydrich, the butcher of Prague, during the Second World War.
Review:
An unconvincing wartime thriller with a particularly stiff lead. The presentation at times rings wilfully false, perhaps due to Brecht's involvement, and the characters are rarely more than two-dimensional with some amusingly camped-up detail for the villains: one pulls his knuckles, another slugs beer, and still another sports an enormous spot on his cheek; one even utters the line, 'We have ways of making you talk'. The direction, however, is never frivolous and delivers some dramatic effects.
