The Girl with a Pistol (1968)

(La ragazza con la pistola)

Country: IT
Technical: col 103m
Director: Mario Monicelli
Cast: Monica Vitti, Stanley Baker, Corin Redgrave, Anthony Booth, Carlo Giuffrè

Synopsis:

A Sicilian girl dishonoured by a Mafioso pursues him to England with an automatic in her handbag. She is helped by a playboy, a surgeon, and a lovelorn homosexual.

Review:

Atrociously amateur comedy, apparently intended as an irreverent exposé of still extant practices but coming across as simply reprehensible. It bases its so-called laughs on the contrast between Sicilian and British sexual politics, and has a singularly random grasp of English geography. Ferry to Jersey from Brighton, anyone? Closing dialogue: 'You were a putana then and you are still a putana!' (Spoken by the girl's rapist after they have started speaking to each other in English!) A huge success in Italy, it garnered Vitti no less than five best actress awards from various film festivals (she is the best thing in it, admittedly) but it was also nominated for Best Foreign Film Oscar. Madonna!
