The Girl with a Bracelet (2019)

(La fille au bracelet)

Country: FR/BEL
Technical: col/1.66:1 95m
Director: Stéphane Demoustier
Cast: Melissa Guers, Roschdy Zem, Chiara Mastroianni, Anaïs Demoustier

Synopsis:

A lycéenne is arrested for the murder of her childhood friend. Two years later, she and her family endure the court process, during which her silence and self-possession would seem to point to her guilt.

Review:

Absorbing courtroom drama, which avoids generic peaks and troughs and concerns itself with the disconnect between the adult world and that of the child characters. As the defence counsel pronounces, we know nothing of this world and so cannot take as signifiers behaviours which might condemn us ourselves. It is left open whether their affectless sexual promiscuity is the price we/they/society must pay for their disarming honesty, or indeed, in a more flawed sense, who did in fact commit the murder, but in its eloquent performances and forensic camerawork this is a triumph of realist continental film making.
