The Gambler (1974)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 111m
Director: Karel Reisz
Cast: `James Caan, Paul Sorvino, Lauren Hutton, Burt Young, James Woods

Synopsis:

A professor of humanities is also an obsessive gambler who is impelled towards long odds and alienates his family and girlfriend.

Review:

Loosely based on Dostoevsky, this is probably the film that gets closest to the psychology of the true gambler, one whose aim is not instant wealth, or even the redemption of his debts and avoidance of violent retribution, but the overcoming of hopeless odds through his will to win. Caan delivers a compelling performance, strutting around New York with an aura of invulnerability about him, and Sorvino is outstanding support as usual. Jerry Fielding interestingly arranges Mahler's First Symphony for musical backing (the family is Jewish).
