The Guard (2011)

£0.00

Country: EIRE
Technical: col/2.35:1 96m
Director: John Michael McDonagh
Cast: Brendan Gleeson, Don Cheadle, Liam Cunningham, Mark Strong

Synopsis:

A seasoned but honest Garda officer in the west of Ireland raises an eyebrow when a murder and a disappearance occur on his quiet beat, and, despite his casual racism, is the one officer to second the efforts of a black FBI operative on the trail of a large shipment of cocaine.

Review:

Genial comedy for hardened tastes, its engagingly self-mocking humour at the expense of the Irish being one of its most ingratiating features, together with the participation of the incomparable Gleeson. A low-key approach to its dramatic narrative, and even to the humour/sentiment of its 'fish out of water' subplot, does not detract from the human cost or the truth of the many quietly emotional moments. Fans of In Bruges will not be disappointed, and Mark Strong is a highlight as a disgusted cockney criminal with a nostalgia for personal standards.
