The Grump (2014)
(Mielensäpahoittaja)
Country: FIN/ICE
Technical: col/2.35:1 104m
Director: Dome Karukoski
Cast: Antti Litja, Petra Frey, Mari Perankoski
Synopsis:
A crusty septuagenarian set in his ways is thrust out of his comfort zone when he injures his leg and is forced to spend time with his daughter-in-law in the city.
Review:
The expected targets are well aimed in this comedy drama about getting old. The rustic all-but-widower may be an unsmiling mule-headed old fart with a grudge against waste and modern technology, but he comes in handy when it comes to sweet-talking some Russians fixing to pull a fast one on his daughter-in-law. Similarly the younger generation have something to learn about taking their time. It's all a bit Crocodile Dundee by moments, but true to its Scandinavian roots it avoids mawkishness and settles for wistful poignancy.
