The Great Gatsby (2013)

£0.00

Country: AUS/US
Technical: col/2.35:1 143m
Director: Baz Luhrmann
Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke

Synopsis:

A depressed alcoholic unloads himself to his psychiatrist, telling of the man who for him stood above the pervading tawdriness of the jazz age.

Review:

Another crack at the Fitzgerald classic does not quite nail it for this viewer. Redford was in many ways the ideal Gatsby, and at times DiCaprio's performance positively exudes Redford, and indeed is the best thing about this, but recalling a previous film treatment is not a good start. Then there is the besetting problem of Maguire as Carraway, not just callow and priggish, but clutzy in an embarrassing way. Luhrmann's flamboyant mise en scène scores a goal with his portrait of the Tartarus that lies between Long Island and Manhattan, but is altogether too insistent, too showy; nothing is real, and in the end the bauble implodes in Disneyesque glitziness. Mulligan is generally superior to Farrow, as Daisy Buchanan, however, making this definitely worth a look.
