The Good the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

£0.00

(Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo)

Country: IT
Technical: Techniscope 171m
Director: Sergio Leone
Cast: Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, Lee Van Cleef

Synopsis:

During the Civil War three outlaws remain loyal only to the unearthing of a buried payroll whose original takers are all dead.

Review:

The closing segment of the 'Dollars' trilogy - or is it the first, since the antihero acquires his famous poncho in the final reel? - is a true epic: it takes half an hour for the three main characters to be introduced. It was the first sign that Leone wanted to do more than just pay homage to the gunfight and add a few visual/musical flourishes; he also wanted to present a personal view of the history behind the Western, and to do so chose a period which prefigures the customary setting of the genre. It is the anti-war asides of this monster of a film which seem so at odds with the greed and violence evinced elsewhere, but which stick in the mind nonetheless for their compassion.
