The Good German (2006)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: bw/1.37:1 105m
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Cast: George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, Tobey Maguire, Jack Thompson

Synopsis:

Berlin, 1945. An American journalist in town for the Potsdam conference is embroiled, through his driver and former mistress, in the search for and protection of a vital witness to war crimes perpetrated by a Nazi scientist the Allies want to spirit out of the country.

Review:

This very knowing and slickly made entertainment has modelled itself stylistically on 1940s film noir, in particular Casablanca and The Third Man, in a manner reminiscent of Woody Allen's Shadows and Fog. The only problem is that in being a kind of anti-Casablanca for a politically sophisticated age, it is in danger of wasting its studio gloss trappings on a story that is ostensibly more substantial. The result is an uneasy blend of Marlowesque plotting, modern profanity and period paciness. The actors are left with little to do, except in Clooney's case get beaten up an awful lot.
