The Golden Compass (2007)

£0.00

Country: GB/US
Technical: DeLuxe/Super 35 113m
Director: Chris Weitz
Cast: Nicole Kidman, Dakota Blue Richards, Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Christopher Lee, Tom Courtenay, Derek Jacobi, Jim Carter

Synopsis:

In a parallel world humans walk alongside their souls, who take on animal form and are called demons. They are linked to other worlds by an interplanetary dust, knowledge of which is strenuously guarded by the magisterium, the supreme terrestrial authority. An explorer finds a compass capable of pointing to the truth, as well as obtaining photographic evidence of the dust. Meanwhile his niece stumbles upon evidence of a fiendish plot to kidnap children and surgically separate them from their demons...

Review:

It is clear from the start that we are entering a Tolkien-like fantasy universe here, and the generic hocus pocus does raise a smile or two from those uninitiated to the books (the Northern Lights trilogy). For the rest it is no more than selected highlights of its literary forbear (no pun intended) and as such works splendidly as a riproaring children's adventure film. Effects work is a tad Never-Ending Storyish, save for the bears, where all the money clearly went.
