The Ghost (2010)

(The Ghost Writer)

Country: FR/GER/GB
Technical: col/2.35:1 128m
Director: Roman Polanski
Cast: Ewan McGregor, Jon Bernthal, Kim Cattrall, Pierce Brosnan, Olivia Williams, Timothy Hutton, Tom Wilkinson, James Belushi

Synopsis:

A ghost writer is hired to rewrite the memoirs of a former British Prime Minister while holed up on an island off the New England coast where his predecessor on the book met an untimely death.

Review:

A return to form for Polanski; with a number of reminiscences of earlier successes (Chinatown and The Tenant in particular), not to mention a strong Hitchcockian aura, and a tight script and excellent cast, the thriller is shot with total assurance, and a macabre sense of fun. The final shot is an inspiration and perfectly encapsulates how film does such things differently to the printed page (the screenplay was drawn from Robert Harriss own novel, clearly based on Tony Blair and the rendition furore). Jutland appears to do service for Marthas Vineyard, or some such, filmed wonderfully out of season: the director still cannot film in the US, indeed he was almost extradited from Switzerland soon after the film was completed.
