Le goût des autres (2000)

£0.00

Country: FR
Technical: col/scope 113m
Director: Agnès Jaoui
Cast: Anne Alvaro, Jean-Pierre Bacri, Alain Chabat, Agnès Jaoui, Gérard Lanvin

Synopsis:

An uncultured industrialist preparing to sign an international deal takes English lessons from a woman he later sees play Bérénice, and begins to mix with her circle of friends in the hope of winning her interest. His driver and bodyguard meanwhile have affairs of their own.

Review:

The beauty of the work of this stable (a more middlebrow version of Rohmer's subtle - and more talkative - comedies of sentiment) is to make everyday dialogue and situations absorbing, and the Jaoui-Bacri partnership again pull off a superb piece of ensemble writing and acting. The Bacri character is indeed shallow and ignorant, but the actress misjudges him nonetheless, just as he misjudges his university-educated personal assistant; it is a nuance one rarely sees at the cinema, and the French do this kind of thing to a tee. Nor are minor characters neglected, with the theme reflected in a variety of couplings, and one is left with a sense of the arbitrary nature of relationships.
