La grande vadrouille (1966)

£0.00

(Don't Look Now, We've Been Shot at)

Country: FR/GB
Technical: Eastmancolor/scope 132m
Director: Gérard Oury
Cast: Bourvil, Louis de Funès, Claudio Brook, Andréa Parisy, Marie Dubois, Terry-Thomas

Synopsis:

Allied airmen parachute from a stricken bomber over Paris and are aided by an opera director and painter until they are smuggled out via Burgundy into neutral territory.

Review:

(...though no one explains how they are supposed to glide from Burgundy into Switzerland.) One of the most commercially successful French films ever made, which speaks volumes for the popular gallic sense of humour, this Magnificent Men-style romp features Nazis so ineffectual as likely to cause offence to anyone concerned to preserve a spirit of danger regarding the war, or warfare in general. Bourvil and de Funès's schtick will scarcely raise a smile among Anglo-American audiences; only Terry-Thomas emerges with some kudos, showing he can speak reasonable French and appreciate good Burgundy.
