Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/Vistavision 122m
Director: John Sturges
Cast: Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, John Ireland, Jo Van Fleet, Rhonda Fleming, Dennis Hopper

Synopsis:

Doc Holliday's score to settle with Johnny Ringo and Wyatt Earp's attempt to stop the Clantons from selling stolen cattle arrive at their common fruition in Tombstone when the Clantons kill the one of the younger Earp brothers.

Review:

Dramatically diffuse attempt to do justice to historic figures, with action ranging between three separate locations and the prickly relationship between Holliday and Earp the only constant. Lancaster is the still centre of the film, albeit upstaged by a florid, coughing and spluttering Douglas; Fleming is sidelined halfway through the action when Earp goes off to help his brothers, and there is no reunion. There remains Tiomkin's immortal ballad, sung by Frankie Laine, which punctuates and helps unify the action, Charles Lang's pin-sharp VistaVision cinematography, and Sturges's well-staged climactic gunfight, to raise the production above the standard grade A studio fare (Paramount).
