Goodbye, Columbus (1969)

Country: US
Technical: col 102m
Director: Larry Peerce
Cast: Richard Benjamin, Ali MacGraw, Jack Klugman

Synopsis:

A Jewish graduate from the Bronx meets a Jewish college girl at a country club for the select and they fall in love. He is intellectual, cynical and not sure what he wants to do with his life; she has a rich businessman father, and is used to being around people who want to make money, but responds to his subversive sense of humour and self-assurance. They are perfect together, except for where they are coming from.

Review:

Witty, bitter-sweet romance that also gently mocks a certain outlook and behaviour, what might be called American (not just Jewish-American) consumerism and ethics: Neil 'eats like a bird', as is said more than once, while the others gorge themselves like there is no tomorrow, for example. Written like a cross between The Graduate and Catch-22 (with its ear for off-centre dialogue), the film suffered in the shadow of the former film, which it superficially resembles. However, while both end on a question mark for their lovers, this one is far bleaker. The title comes from Brenda's brother's college and football team: leave college, settle down and make a living, i.e. everything Neil (and Benjamin Braddock) kick against.
