Good Morning Babylon (1987)

£0.00

Country: IT/FR
Technical: col 115m
Director: Paolo and Vittorio Taviani
Cast: Vincent Spano, Joaquim de Almeida, Greta Scacchi, Charles Dance

Synopsis:

Two brother masons from Italy find themselves taken away from restoring cathedrals to work on D. W. Griffith's Intolerance.

Review:

A rich film which possibly tries to do too much. First, in its story of two brother artists it mirrors the makers' own experiences together; then it's a homage to Hollywood cinema of the old school; then again it's a tribute to all artists and to the endless renewal necessary to the survival of any art; finally there are references to other films: the makers' own Padre Padrone and Bertolucci's 1900, with the images of fighting brothers, here on tram lines instead of railway tracks! This is all surprisingly well subsumed within the story structure and the final sequence, in which the brothers' story and the themes of art (the basilica) and cinema (the camera) come together, is majestic.
