(Gomorra)

Country: IT
Technical: Technicolor/2.35:1 137m
Director: Matteo Garrone
Cast: Toni Servillo, Gianfelice Imparato, Maria Nazionale

Synopsis:

In a southern Italian city rival Camorra gangs fight it out for supremacy and two hotheaded boys fancy their chances of striking out on their own. Elsewhere corruption and exploitation are rife in areas such as waste disposal and haute couture.

Review:

Boasting an array of characters and a sprawling multi-stranded narrative, this hard-hitting exposé of very real organised crime problems to rival Sicily's Mafia is sometimes hard to follow in its loose affiliations and cross-edited structure. Nevertheless, glamourised it isn't, being if anything grittier than City of God and certainly less entertaining in a visual sense. The director got into some hot water over it, which is not surprising and points to a very disquieting reality in Italy.
