Gold (1974)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col/scope 120m
Director: Peter Hunt
Cast: Roger Moore, Susannah York, Ray Milland, Bradford Dillman, Tony Beckley, John Gielgud

Synopsis:

The creatively appointed general manager of a South African gold mine is undermined by the sabotage and speculation of his superiors and the racism of his foreman.

Review:

Sub-007 heroics for an off-duty Bond but probably the best film of its star, a well mounted thriller set in an unusual milieu and with a nail-biting finale. Now it is also a fascinating time capsule of life in S. A. under apartheid; the pauses for romance, too sluggish for modern tastes, seem an endearing indulgence. Milland is superb, and the mining scenes have a cramped immediacy, whether on location or perfectly matched at Pinewood. (Interestingly, given Moore's association with Eon productions at the time, the film boasts contributions from Bond technicians Maurice Binder, Don Black and Peter Hunt himself.)
