Godzilla (1954)
(Gojira)
Country: JAP
Technical: bw 96m
Director: Inoshiro Honda
Cast: Takashi Shimura, Momoko Kochi
Synopsis:
H-bomb tests off Japan's coast rouse a prehistoric monster which runs amok, first sinking ships, then attacking Tokyo itself.
Review:
Fitfully brisk but mostly alternating interminable scenes of the human characters wrestling with their consciences, with others in which a rubber-suited stuntman wrestles with large expanses of model scenery. The anti-nuclear message is clear and well taken, but the many sequels hardly seem justified now. This debut film was re-edited for US audiences to include scenes with actor Raymond Burr, and much shortened in the process.
