The synopsis gives some insight into the absurd contrivance of the film, which together with the military's time-honoured ineptitude reduces it to an exercise in having an improvised group of 'individuals' save the Big Apple from the monster threat. Various borrowings, not least from "Jurassic Park", do not make for originality either but people went to see the effects and they constitute another leap forward.
