Girlfriends (1978)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 88m
Director: Claudia Weill
Cast: Melanie Mayron, Eli Wallach, Anita Skinner, Christopher Guest, Bob Balaban

Synopsis:

Homely, aspiring Jewish photographer Susan Weinblatt shares a New York apartment with her friend Anne. When the latter marries impetuously, Susan finds herself at a crossroads, abandoned. Various romantic opportunities present themselves, and one or two professional ones, as she strives to preserve her self-esteem.

Review:

Trailblazing example of feminist, indie filmmaking, surely an Ur text for Holofcener, Gerwig and others. Its set-up recalls Eric Rohmer's forays into love, friendship and hurt feelings, but the interpretation is more freewheeling, the mumps business in particular recalling Woody Allen. It shows its age a little now, and acting, editing and mise en scène are at times revealing of the low budget (and protracted production). Mayron's Susan, however, continues to charm in her directness and resilience.
