Ghost in the Shell (1995)

£0.00

Country: JAP/US
Technical: Eastmancolor 83m
Director: Oshii Mamoru
Cast: animated

Synopsis:

In a Tokyo of the future humanoid forms (shells) are produced en masse and rare is the person who is one hundred percent organic matter. Meanwhile there are cyborgs who nevertheless possess a soul (ghost). One such, a top police officer (female) hunts down a master pirate hacker known as The Puppet Master who has breached security at the highest levels. Meanwhile the different Section Heads are bent on their own internecine struggle for primacy.

Review:

Impossibly talky (and impenetrable) sci-fi anime, betraying its Manga origins. Amidst all the mumbo-jumbo there are some majestic city scapes and imaginative strokes, some of which allegedly inspired The Matrix, not least the Dickian concept that all one's childhood memories etc. are computer implants in a genetically engineered brain.
