Genesis (1986)

£0.00

Country: IND/SW/BEL/FR
Technical: col 105m
Director: Mrinal Sen
Cast: Shabana Azmi, Om Puri, M.K. Raina, Naseeruddin Shah

Synopsis:

Two men and a woman come to a deserted town and make their home. To begin with all is well but, as prosperity beckons, tensions mount over the woman and they are deceived by a trader from outside.

Review:

The title is an indicator to the parallel 'loss of paradise', except that here it is hardly a paradise to begin with. All along anachronisms have been appearing (planes flying overhead, a petrol can in the sand, binoculars), and at the end we discover that it is all happening today, as the bulldozers move in on the rubble. Man, then, has not progressed one iota and will never change. The director's theme is said to be: 'wretched are the meek, for they shall not inherit the earth'! Whatever the case, this is ultimately a schematic, slow-moving exercise.
