Country: FR/POR
Technical: col 114m
Director: Raoul Ruiz
Cast: Catherine Deneuve, Michel Piccoli, Melvil Poupaud, Andrzej Seweryn, Mathieu Amalric, Bernadette Lafont

Synopsis:

When a woman attorney renowned for espousing lost causes loses her son, she soon finds a surrogate in the shape of a young man accused of knifing his aunt. Unfortunately, the same thing seems to be happening for him.

Review:

Buñuelian jeu d'esprit on the determining power of stories, whereby one finds oneself locked into a chain of events which has happened before, in this case a bookend tale from Chinese mythology about a murderer who is given shelter by the phantom of his victim, with whom he then falls in love. Its absurd turns of dialogue and Byzantine logic dressed up as psychology provide ample entertainment for those fond of the liberating cinema of the surreal.
