A Good Year (2006)

£0.00

Country: US/GB
Technical: col/2.35:1 117m
Director: Ridley Scott
Cast: Russell Crowe, Marion Cotillard, Albert Finney, Freddie Highmore, Tom Hollander, Abbie Cornish, Didier Bourdon

Synopsis:

A successful but callous investment broker is lured back to the Provence of his childhood by the death of his uncle, and the promise of a tidy sum to be made from the latter's country pile-cum-wine château. But then the memories come back to haunt him, and more besides...

Review:

The director of historical pageants displays an unsuspected lightness of touch in this sunny adaptation of Peter Mayle's bestseller, and frequent collaborator Crowe acquits himself with equally winning results, even if he is hard to make out without subtitles. It's an uncomplicated, feelgood entertainment; one is never in any doubt about a happy conclusion, but it is a joy to watch the characters get there. A sort of 'Shirley Valentine for men'!
