(The Well-Digger's Daughter)

Country: FR
Technical: col 107m
Director: Daniel Auteuil
Cast: Daniel Auteuil, Kad Merad, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Sabine Azéma

Synopsis:

1930s Provence: the well-digger's mate is in love with his eldest daughter, and favourite, but she loves the son of the local hardware storekeeper. When a nocturnal ride on a motorcycle and hostilities intervene, the stage is set for some hard decisions and tragic tidings.

Review:

Impeccably packaged Pagnol, from an actor who staked his career on reviving the classic successes of Raimu et al. It does not quite have the dramatic heft of Berri's epoch-making remakes, but then it is a lighter work. The actors perform their parts adroitly (though the young Mazel never quite convinces, as if he belongs to a different decade), the war remains comfortably in the background, and it charms us into nostalgia with its rural vistas and southern accents.
