Synopsis:
A student takes up with a feisty tobacconist's assistant, who happens also to be the mistress of his bully of a Latin master.
Review:
Full of characters racked by fear and guilt, and with a goodly form master to sing the praises of teaching based on respect for the pupil, this is all too apparently an early work of screenwriter Ingmar Bergman. There is just a hint of decadence to muddy the waters, but some of the college scenes play uncannily like bits of A Yank at Oxford. One waits for the Zetterling character to blossom into something more significant, and the Latin master to be unmasked; indeed, we are never quite sure whether he is 'evil incarnate' or simply a weak, scared, cruel, bitter eccentric. There are, however, some remarkable visual strokes and 'good scenes' alternating with the tantrums of the lead character and several unconscionable jumps in plot development.
