Foxcatcher (2014)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 134m
Director: Bennett Miller
Cast: Channing Tatum, Steve Carell, Mark Ruffalo, Sienna Miller, Vanessa Redgrave

Synopsis:

An Olympic wrestling champion is lured away from his brother's tutelage by a multi-millionaire closet case with severe self-esteem issues, John Du Pont. Using his Foxcatcher estate as the base for Schultz to train the next Olympic team, he gradually subdues the weaker minded athlete to his will, before rejecting him in favour of his older brother.

Review:

Were it not a true story, this dreary and prolonged drama would be of interest solely to aficionados of the sport, a good deal of which is on show, and very impressively Ruffalo and Tatum have done their homework, too. The pace is deliberate, the presentation unostentatious and performances reined in, with the lead playing 27 year-old Schultz as a knuckle-headed adolescent. It all stands or falls on Carell's extraordinary impersonation, complete with prosthetic nose job. He exudes a kind of fragile menace but, like the finished film, it is one note coming to a full stop.
