Flash Gordon (1980)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col/scope 115m
Director: Michael Hodges
Cast: Sam J. Jones, Melody Anderson, Topol, Max von Sydow, Ornella Muti, Timothy Dalton, Brian Blessed, Peter Wyngarde

Synopsis:

From the planet Mongo, Ming the Merciless bombards Earth with natural disasters and destabilises its moon as a prelude to total destruction. New York quarterback Flash Gordon and Dale Arden are reluctant draftees aboard Hans Zarkov's spaceship on a mission to thwart the villainous emperor.

Review:

This addition to the superheroes/science fiction fad of the late seventies did lacklustre box office but amassed a considerable fanbase over the succeeding years. In fact it always was an enjoyably tongue-in-cheek romp for those who turned out to see it on its first run, lent undeniable style by the Queen soundtrack and loud, not to say kinky, costumes. The leads are bland enough, and are required to be little more, but the supporting cast offers many delights and the picture is surprisingly sexy for an 'A' of that period.
