(L'affaire Farewell)

Country: FR
Technical: col 113m
Director: Christian Carion
Cast: Emir Kusturica, Guillaume Canet, Alexandra Maria Lara, Niels Arestrup, Fred Ward, Willem Dafoe

Synopsis:

In 1983 a French employee of the electronics company, Thomson, is contacted by a Russian KGB operative, with a view to leaking details of Soviet intelligence. The effect of which knowledge is to strengthen Reagan's hand in the declining years of the Soviet state, leading to the Star Wars umbrella programme. This film is about the price paid on the ground.

Review:

Visually striking, elliptically cut espionage, not in the wilfully confusing manner of the seventies, but sufficient to endow it with style; the focus is on the personalities of the participants, the one an idealist ready to bring the house of cards down on himself for the future of his country, the other a family man reluctant to risk his skin, but who is irresistibly drawn in by the other's charisma. The same is true for us, as Kusturica's performance reveals the presence of a true and little seen film actor.
