Evil Dead (2013)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col/2.35:1 91m
Director: Fede Alvarez
Cast: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci

Synopsis:

Five young adults repair to a cabin in the woods in order to help one of their number through her detox period. Sibling recriminations over care of a mentally insane mother find their worst expression when cipher from a ghoulish book is read out loud by one of their number. Thankfully this derelict dwelling has every comfort and convenience required for casual mayhem, including hot water and an electric carving knife.

Review:

Apparently co-produced by director and star of the original, this $17 million remake cannot, of course, opt for the same cheap and cheerful aesthetic that made The Evil Dead such a hit. Relieved at the same time of any redeeming humour, it becomes merely another grimly effective gore fest in which limbs are hacked and wrenched off with gay abandon. Sadly, someone forgot to write in character identification (demon prayer is not the only cipher here) and so the viewer remains reclined and impassive in the face of the production overkill and seething score.
