Escape to Athena (1979)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col/scope 117m
Director: George Pan Cosmatos
Cast: Roger Moore, David Niven, Elliott Gould, Telly Savalas, Claudia Cardinale

Synopsis:

Allied prisoners of war on a Greek island during WW2 plan to escape and make off with a priceless treasure to be found in a nearby monastery.

Review:

Incoherent and wholly unconvincing romp, whether in its mix of genres already attempted in Kelly's Heroes, or in its deployment of a group of stars all past their sell-by date for this sort of thing (Cardinale is the only one to persuade, as the local madam). There are one or two moments of humour afforded by Gould, and notably by a walk-on from Bill Holden (the prison camp has 'Stalag XVII' on the gate), but the director-to-be of Rambo's second outing would appear to be preoccupied mounting explosions and a carefully choreographed motorcycle chase through narrow streets.
