Elite Squad (2007)

£0.00

(Tropa de Elite)

Country: BRA
Technical: col 115m
Director: José Padilha
Cast: Wagner Moura, André Ramiro, Caio Junqueira, Fernanda Machado

Synopsis:

As the Rio police prepares to make one of its slums peaceful enough not to disturb the visiting Pope's slumbers, the city's elite force, the BOPE, is the focus of internal instability as its Captain loses his nerve and hands over the reins to a pair of volatile rookie cops.

Review:

Modishly achronological, rapid fire in editing and dialogue, and shot with so jittery a handheld camera it genuinely feels as though the crew mounted the entire thing for real, this one step beyond City of God is nothing if not grittily realistic and was a huge commercial success at home. Unschooled foreign audiences will find the subtitles hard to keep up with without missing all the action, which may not be a bad thing for sensitive stomachs. Certainly it does not strike a blow for Brazilian tourism - or feminism.
