The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)
Country: US/CAN
Technical: col/2.35:1 104m
Director: Scott Derrickson
Cast: Jennifer Connelly, Keanu Reeves, Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm, Jaden Smith
Synopsis:
Spheres variable in size visit the Earth to save it from the human species, and an astro-biologist must try to persuade their affectless humanoid spokesman that homo sapiens is worth another chance. Meanwhile she finally bonds with her stepson.
Review:
The only substantive change on the 1951 version is the second time around upping of the stakes, as in 'there is no ultimatum: this is it'. Which leads to a scrambled finish and a removal of much of the sententious debate in favour of a generic 'manhunt' scenario. We also get an irritating kid, which further takes away from the potential for some sort of relationship between Connelly and Reeves. All in all, somewhat of a miscalculation, save for an impressive GORT and a star who was born to play Klaatu. I mean, he's almost got the same name.
