The Dead (1987)
Country: GB
Technical: col 83m
Director: John Huston
Cast: Donal McCann, Anjelica Huston
Synopsis:
On New Year's Eve in Dublin a couple attend a grand festivity but an air from the past recalls the memory of the lover who will forever be closest to the wife's heart.
Review:
Sensitive, understated adaptation of a great Joyce short story, where minutely observed detail is everything and yet its importance is left to the reader to decipher. The shattering final revelation comes upon a cavalcade of mundane incident, and interestingly, as in Strick's Ulysses, it is left to a voice-over culled from the author's pages to perform the impossible task of translating his prose to the screen.
