Dead Man (1995)
Country: US/GER
Technical: bw 121m
Director: Jim Jarmusch
Cast: Johnny Depp, Gary Farmer, Lance Henriksen, Robert Mitchum, Crispin Glover, Gabriel Byrne, John Hurt, Alfred Molina
Synopsis:
A Cleveland accountant travels west to a frontier town to take up a post with a metalworks company. It is only the beginning of a long journey on the road to self-realisation, as he becomes a killer, most wanted man and, for his Indian friend, the poet William Blake.
Review:
Hypnotic Western road movie, from a director with a fondness for the serendipitous. It recalls Down By Law in its 'fugitive in the woods' scenario and also in its awe for nature. Fades are used extensively but rather than draining energy from the narrative leave one with a constant sense of anticipation. The blend of violence, humour and the quasi-mystical, Farmer's Indian being a Roberto Benigni substitute with his cross-cultured ramblings, all add up to a distinctly auteurist experience, and maybe an overly self-conscious one; but new angles on the Western are so hard to find...
