The Counterfeiters (2007)
(Die Fälscher)
Country: GER/ÖST/FR
Technical: col 99m
Director: Stefan Ruzowitzky
Cast: Karl Markovics, August Diehl, Devid Striesow, Martin Brambach
Synopsis:
A counterfeiter winds up in Monte Carlo after the war, where he blows all his ill-gotten gains at roulette. We look back over the preceding years at his arrest as a criminal counterfeit artist, then an artist in a concentration camp, and finally part of a team of dedicated counterfeiters at a different camp, tasked with producing millions of dollars and sterling to destabilize the enemy economies.
Review:
Amazingly based on a true story, this fascinating film differs from most holocaust pictures in eschewing contact with the atrocities being committed only yards away from the main action, at least for the most part. Which of course makes it all the more shocking when we do glimpse or hear signs of what is going on, and it moreover serves the purpose of putting into sharp relief the guilt of these men who are being forced to serve the Nazi war machine. Survival, however, takes the upper hand over scruple, and who can blame them? A fine example of the quality films coming from Germany at the time.
