The City under the Sea (1965)
(War-Gods of the Deep, City in the Sea)
Country: GB/US
Technical: Pathecolor/scope 84m
Director: Jacques Tourneur, Ishirô Honda
Cast: Vincent Price, David Tomlinson, Susan Hart, Tab Hunter
Synopsis:
In Cornwall at the turn of the century locals discover an underwater city inhabited by a society of smugglers and their aquatic slaves.
Review:
Extraordinarily premised fantasy based on a Poe original, with Price playing a cross between one of his Corman characters and Captain Nemo. It is all very formulaic, with atmospheric sequences betrayed by ill-advised lurches into comedy. The Samuel Z. Arkoff production is very basic (released through AIP in the States) and would be Tourneur's last film.
