Synopsis:
A young man tells how a mad doctor sent a somnambulist on murder sprees and drove his fiancé insane. He himself turns out to be in an asylum and the 'doctor' is the director.
Review:
A classic of 'German expressionism' for its set design and lighting. The effect is dreamlike, appropriately since much of the film represents the ravings of an unhinged mind. Historically it said much about the malaise affecting Germany at the end of the Great War and prefigured the styles of Lang, Murnau and, later, Hollywood horror and film noir.
