In 1918 New Orleans a clockmaker designs a clock for the station that runs backwards and at almost the same time a woman dies giving birth to a baby bearing all the signs of advanced old age. Abandoned and living out his early years in an old people's home, Benjamin grows younger the older he gets.
Review:
A lavishly, indeed slavishly, produced piece of whimsy based on a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Some of it is uncomfortably reminiscent of Forrest Gump and Jean-Pierre Jeunet in its outward trappings, but its intent, to illustrate how the transitory nature of existence can be just as poignant even if you are getting younger, touches depths neither of those more whistle-stop creations/creators quite plumbed. The scenes from the middle period, depicting the travels and discoveries of our hero, are particularly striking.
