The Cotton Club (1984)
Country: US
Technical: col/scope 127m
Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Cast: Richard Gere, Diane Lane, Gregory Hines
Synopsis:
Gangsters and hoofers frequent the famous Prohibiton era nightclub.
Review:
Lovingly arranged and exhaustively prolonged recreation of an era. Absorbing, and undoubtedly the work of a master craftsman, but one is left wondering what there was in the drama itself that warranted such magnificent treatment. (A troubled production, the film marked the end of producer Bob Evans's career in movies, along with Coppola's collaboration with the studios as anything more than a director for hire.)
