The Champion (1915)
Country: US
Technical: bw 31m
Director: Charles Chaplin
Cast: Charles Chaplin, Edna Purviance, Ben Turpin, Bud Jamison
Synopsis:
Charlie tries his hand at being a sparring partner and finds himself boxing champion.
Review:
A bit of a narrative mess, this early comedy is nevertheless hugely energetic and builds to a nicely balletic boxing match, later to be rendered perfect in City Lights. This is certainly Chaplin hitting his stride; even if some gags are repeated too often the use of setups is more imaginative with some action crossing the borders of the frame.
