(The Cousins)

Country: FR
Technical: bw 110m
Director: Claude Chabrol
Cast: Jean-Claude Brialy, Gérard Blain, Juliette Mayniel

Synopsis:

The story of two mismatched cousins, one serious, from the provinces and the other accustomed to the town's frivolous pursuits, which have made him idle and cynical.

Review:

Chabrol's sophomore feature is a far more typically sardonic affair than Le beau Serge and its farewell to catholicism. It examines what happens when the serious cousin falls in love with one of the other's acquaintance, a girl of easy virtue who sees him as an opportunity to start afresh. It is as pessimistic as his later work about the possibility of happiness in love, and equally satirical in its view of bourgeois characters.
