Le Colonel Chabert (1994)
Country: FR
Technical: col/scope 111m
Director: Yves Angelo
Cast: Gérard Depardieu, Fanny Ardant, Fabrice Luchini
Synopsis:
Wounded and written off as dead in the Russian campaign, a Napoleonic officer returns to Paris to restore his name and stop his wife financing her new husband's political career.
Review:
A sober Balzac adaptation that has impeccable acting to recommend it, alongside one of the most vivid snowbound battle scenes ever filmed. However, the director, a former cinematographer, does not quite sustain his grip on the material to the end.
